Let's add a little James Brown into the mix, just like Jimi and Stevie did. A funk blues can really add to your set and get people moving. This lick introduces the use of the thumb playing the bass note over the top of the neck to play off of while playing sixteenth rhythms with the pick hand. Fret hand muting is essential to this style of playing – if you don't use it properly, you will cause many unwanted notes to sound or ring out, and it will sound really bad! My pick hand keeps the sixteenth notes going and that is what really propels the groove. Jimi used this technique on 'Killing Floor'.
